The role of the dental lab in your smile makeover.

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

The role of the dental lab in your smile makeover.  You might not have given the idea of which dental laboratory your dentist uses much thought.  You should because this is more important than you think.  Just like all dentists are not created equal neither are the dental laboratories.  Some dental laboratories are large facilities that cater to large quantities of dentists nationally.  This type of dental lab is the Wal-Mart of dentistry.  The teeth they produce are adequate but very little artistry goes into their creation.  This type of lab is available to every dentist and the quality is adequate.  The other type of dental laboratory is like a fine art specialty store.  Here the laboratory personal are more than just technicians stamping out teeth that all look the same.  This laboratory is usually owned by a Master Ceramist.  A Master Ceramist is someone who understands the art of creating a beautiful smile.  Their creations are indistinguishable from natural teeth.  Only a select few dentists who qualify in skill comparable to the ceramist are invited to use the laboratory to create beautiful smiles. Naturally the cost for teeth created by a Master Ceramist is very different than those created by the Wal-Mart technician.  Both will work.  The question is do you want your smile to be a custom fabricated work of art indistinguishable to natural beautiful teeth or do you want  standard “teeth”.  In dentistry as in all walks of life you get what you pay for and the best always costs more.

When considering cosmetic dentistry with Porcelain veneers

Monday, September 28th, 2009

When considering cosmetic dentistry and porcelain veneers it is important for you to be diligence with who you are considering treatment.  All dentists are not the same and their experience in treating cosmetic cases varies based on their training and number of patients treated.  When considering cosmetic dentistry the dentist should be able to show you numerous cases of satisfied patients who have completed treatment.  Ask questions about smiles and smile makeovers that are similar to yours.  Review before and after photographs of the smiles treated with veneers.  Where you have a smile makeover is as important as deciding to have treatment.  It is up to you to make the best choice and have the best outcome.

Lumineers, What are my options?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Lumineers, What are my options?  Lumineers are one type of porcelain veneer designed for prep-less or minimal preparation type porcelain veneer cases.  It is important to realize that there is not just one certain brand of ceramic, one particular manufacturer, or one specific laboratory that can create prep-less veneers.  The prep-less or minimal prep veneer is a technique, not a specific product.  Any ceramic can be used, and there are many expert ceramists who can give you wonderful results.  Success is reliant on the skill of the dentist and the ceramist.  It is also dependent on case selection and proper diagnosis of what is the best material and technique to achieve the best result according to the patients’ expectation.    Prep-less veneers may not be indicated for every case or even the majority of the cases but it should be available as an option.  Like Dr. Lerner and Dr Lemongello the doctor needs to be versed and proficient in all techniques.  In our office we will listen to your needs and provide guidance for you to make an informed choice.

Cosmetic Dentist?

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Ever notice how every dentist now is a Cosmetic Dentist.  Any dentist can take a weekend course and consider themselves a cosmetic dentist.  Actually they don’t even need to take a course.  In today’s’ world just because a dentist has what appears to be a state of the art office doesn’t mean he is qualified in cosmetic dentistry. So how is a consumer hoping to transform their smile supposed to know who to choose?  One way is to ask the right questions!  Can the dentist show you before and after photos of other patients’ treated in the office?  Has the dentist taken hands on instruction in cosmetic dentistry?  Does the dentist teach these techniques to other dentists?  Do other specialists in the field recommend the dentist?  Can you personally speak to actual patients that have been treated?  In our office, Drs. Lerner and Lemongello can answer yes to all these questions.  Can the dentist you are considering treatment with do the same? If not perhaps you need to make an appointment in our office.

“I don’t grind my teeth”

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

“I don’t grind my teeth”  As a dentist do you know how often we hear this statement?  Research suggests that 100% of people grind their teeth sometime in their lives.  Most of us regularly grind our teeth at night during sleep, called Bruxism.  Only a small population does this rarely.  For many, Bruxism is connected with stress in our lives and expressed as night time grinding of teeth during sleep.  For others Bruxism is like a program in our Central Nervous System that runs every night.  The problem is this occurs during sleep so most people are unaware that they possess this habit.  Unfortunately for your teeth Bruxism is very destructive.  Minimal tooth wear occurs from chewing and eating over the course of a life time but Bruxism can cause significant tooth wear in a short time destroying your teeth and breaking any existing dental work. The most apparent place for you to see wear from Brusism is on your front teeth.  If your teeth are getting shorter and becoming almost see through or constantly chipping along the edges you are grinding your teeth.  This can lead to other problems such as TMJ or occlusion problems.  Fortunately there are preventative and restorative options to correct wear from Bruxism and give you a beautiful smile.
