The combination of Invisalign and Veneers to achieve a beautiful smile

Monday, July 27th, 2009

The combination of Invisalign and Veneers to achieve a beautiful smile.  We often see patients with very crooked teeth that are interested in improving their smile.  When this is the case a smile makeover can be achieved with porcelain veneers alone or perhaps just orthodontic treatment but when used to together the result is often greatly improved.  Orthodontic treatment with Invisalign allows for correcting the position of the teeth first.  Once the teeth are in a better position the use of porcelain veneers is a very predictable, minimally invasive way to correct the color, shape and worn appearance of the teeth.

A Wider Smile

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Did you ever notice that sometimes when people smile you only see their front teeth.  Why is that?  Often these people during development and tooth eruption form in a way where the front teeth became dominant and the back teeth get tucked back behind them.  The dental term for this is Arch Form.  Their “arch form” is “V” shaped instead of “U” shaped.  This results in a more vertical appearance to the smile.  In a big smile the sides of the mouth seem empty and dark compared to the front. The teeth on the side just do not fill the smile or support the lips.   In order to improve the appearance of someone with this type of smile the teeth that are tucked back along the side need to be brought out to expand the smile in a horizontal way.  This will fill in the sides of the smile and support the lip.  This type of smile improvement can be accomplished in different ways.  It can be accomplished with veneers giving the illusion of a broader smile or it can be accomplished with orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign to move the teeth to a better, more visible position.  Either way the result is a wider, more uniform, natural smile.

How many teeth does it take to improve a smile?

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

A new patient was seen in the office today to discuss how many teeth would need to be treated to improve her smile.  How many teeth does it take to improve a smile?  This is a good question.  The answer depends on your goals for improvement and how many teeth show in your smile.  Often, we see patients who think all they need to treat is the 4 or maybe 6 front teeth to improve their smile.  In some cases this is true but the majority of the time it is 10 to 12 teeth that need treatment.  The best way to judge this is with a photograph taken with a big smile.  When you look at the photograph take a close look.  Usually up to 10 teeth show in a smile not just 4 or 6.  If your goal is to improve the color of your teeth than all the teeth visible must be treated or the difference in color will be obvious and look artificial.  Treating 4 or 6 teeth will actually make it look worse because now the front and side teeth will not match at all.  There are some exceptions especially if you are happy with the overall color of your teeth.  If just the front teeth are chipped or out of alignment than 4 teeth might be all that is needed to give you the beautiful smile you hoped for.  Our office is ready to see you for a consultation and discuss your options whatever your treatment needs are.

Patient from Germany receives Smile Makeover

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Patient from Germany receives smile makeover.  We often see in the news how Americans are traveling abroad for cosmetic procedures.  What we don’t hear about is how often patients travel here.  The United States is still considered by many to be the premier destination for medical procedures.  This is certainly true for Cosmetic dentistry.  The United States leads the world in Smile Makeovers.  Today our patient traveled from Germany to receive his dental treatment.  He received porcelain crowns and porcelain veneers to correct his bite and improve the appearance of his teeth. He was amazed at how easy it all went.  Fortunately, for most of us we don’t need to travel far to receive world class dental care

Porcelain Veneers for bottom teeth

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Most patients interested in improving their smile usually focus on the top front teeth.  However, your smile is made up of more than just your front teeth.  When you smile you often show many teeth on the side.  Sometimes you can show teeth all the way to the back of your mouth.  How about your bottom front teeth?  Did you know that when you laugh and speak your bottom front teeth show too?  Today we completed porcelain veneers for our patient on her bottom front teeth.  Look in the mirror.  Take a look at those bottom front teeth.  Often these teeth show years of age, chipping and wear usually more so than your top front teeth.  When completing a smile makeover we often need to consider restoring not only the top teeth with porcelain veneers but the bottom teeth as well.
