Recently one of our doctors was asked why it is necessary to have a temporary crown made for an implant? This is a good question. The reason a temporary is necessary, especially with a front tooth, is the role the implant temporary plays in healing. When an implant temporary is placed it helps guide the gum tissue to grow around the implant in a natural way. It also provides a foundation to support the gum so it doesn’t collapse and loose its shape. Without a temporary a space can develop around the implant tooth leaving a gap between the teeth making the tooth look unnatural. Our goal is to provide the most natural restoration possible.

Today in our office we completed the placement of an implant crown on a patient with a missing front tooth. This patient had the misfortune of fracturing his front tooth. Working with our team of highly skilled surgeons the tooth was removed and a dental implant placed. Special training and techniques are needed to make the implant tooth and more importantly the gum around it look real. We work with nationally recognized specialists who have the necessary surgical training to properly place the implant and cultivate the correct environment for success. The surgical expertise is equally important for a beautiful successful outcome. Once healing was complete a provisional implant crown was created using specialized techniques to guide the gum tissue to grow and look natural around the implant. The final all ceramic zirconium crown was fabricated by a master ceramist and cemented in place. The result was a beautiful lifelike match to his other front teeth.

Is it better to have a Root Canal or an Implant? This is a good question. The answer is…..it depends on the condition of the tooth. Let’s discuss Root Canal treatment. If the tooth remains structurally sound and at least 1/3 of the tooth remains as a foundation to build onto than a Root canal may be the right treatment. In order to save a tooth once treated with a root canal the tooth will usually require a crown to restore it to strength. There is a critical limit of tooth structure required to be predictable long term. If there isn’t than investing in the tooth may not be the best option long term. What also needs to be understood is that this is still your natural tooth. This means that this tooth could decay again and is prone to fracture just like any other restored tooth. Our office and Dr. Lerner or Dr. Lemongello will discuss what your best option is in your specific case.

We often see patients who want to be assured they are receiving the highest quality of care possible. It can be difficult to measure the quality of care in a service industry like dentistry. There are however common factors for dentistry as in all businesses. You often hear “you get what you pay for”. Dentistry is no different. Be cautious about claims for free treatment or special low prices for treatment such as crowns or implants. It may be tempting to try to save money but there is a reason quality care costs more. All crowns are not created equal. Some are produced here in the United States with quality control using only the finest porcelain materials and high content gold metals. Other cheaper versions can be produced in places like China where questionable materials and quality control can be passed off as a high quality product. If a crown or implant is being advertised for hundreds of dollars less than most dentists charge than how could it be the same quality for so much less? In the long term high quality care will pay for itself with improved health and fewer dental problems. Poor quality care leads to additional treatments, more often and usually leads to poor health.

Dental Implant Restorations. Treatment with dental implants to replace missing teeth has become routine in today’s dental practice. Restoration of missing teeth with implants has a very high success rate compared to other more common dental procedures. When considering restoration of a severely decayed or broken tooth, placement of an implant restoration may be a more predictable long term solution. Today we placed the final implant restoration on a patient from Jupiter. She was amazed at how simple the appointment was and pleased with her decision to restore her mouth to health with this option.

It is common practice with implant crowns to cement them with provisional cement. This allows for future removal if necessary to make adjustments or maintain any of the internal structures. If you have ever had an implant retaining screw loosen within the implant abutment you are aware of why temporary cement allows the components to be removed and tightened as needed. In this way your implant crown can be maintained trouble free for many years.
